Khmer (Cambodian) Language Classes | 8-week progressive programs

Khmer classes meet once per week for a 2-hour lesson*. At each level, the program length is 8 weeks. We offer levels 1 to 6 and beyond.

HIGHLIGHTS: Experienced and qualified teachers, structured teaching, communicative approach, and measurable results.

TEXTBOOK: Colloquial Cambodian. The textbook is not included in the price.

While we use the prescribed textbook throughout the course, the lesson plans exhibit teacher’s experience and the adaptability skills in view of the classroom's changing needs. We believe that using a textbook yields the best results for beginner and intermediate students. Therefore, it’s advisable to buy the prescribed textbook(s). They also provide explanatory information that may be useful for a questioning adult student and for homework.

Whether you are just beginning your journey with the Khmer language or looking to deepen your existing skills, this course series offers a structured and comprehensive approach to learning. Each level is designed to build upon the previous one—starting with essential foundations, advancing through grammar and vocabulary development, and culminating in fluency, cultural understanding, and real-world application. Through interactive lessons, practical exercises, and authentic materials, students will gain the confidence and competence needed to communicate effectively in Khmer. Descriptions for higher or specialized levels beyond Level 3 are available upon request.

Khmer Level 1:
- Explore the history and cultural background of the Khmer language.
- Introduce the Khmer alphabet and vowels for beginners or those with limited prior knowledge.
- Learn proper pronunciation of consonants and vowels.
- Develop basic conversational skills such as greetings, self-introductions, talking about locations, daily activities, and commonly used vocabulary.
- Learn how to express numbers, dates, and time.
- Begin forming simple sentence structures for everyday communication.

Khmer Level 2:
-Strengthen reading comprehension and foundational writing skills.
-Learn to construct longer and more complex sentences.
-Study essential grammar rules and significantly expand vocabulary.
-Practice forming and understanding more advanced sentence structures.
-Enhance speaking skills through reading aloud and forming verbal responses.
-Develop a stronger grasp of standard Khmer in both written and spoken form.

Khmer Level 3:
-Focus on fluency and accuracy in both written and spoken Khmer.
-Engage in reading and analyzing authentic texts, such as short stories, news articles, or traditional literature.
-Practice writing essays, summaries, and opinion pieces to express more complex ideas.
-Deepen understanding of advanced grammar, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances.
-Participate in structured conversations, debates, and presentations to improve confidence and spontaneity in speech.
-Learn to adapt language use based on formal and informal contexts.
-Build strong translation and interpretation skills between Khmer and another language (e.g., English), where appropriate.

Lim, F. (Instructor)
A dedicated language educator and community advocate, Mr. Lim brings extensive experience supporting multicultural and underrepresented adult learners in higher education. Bilingual in Khmer and English, he co-founded the English Teaching Solidarity Initiative (ETSI), providing foundational language instruction to adults in underserved Cambodian communities. His work spans academic coaching, mentoring, and college readiness programs tailored to Asian American, Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ students. As a certified Khmer-English interpreter and experienced program specialist, Mr Lim is committed to fostering inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments that empower adult learners to thrive academically and professionally.
